Sambar Recipe

Sambar is a south Indian curry recipe. It is made with toor dal, vegetables and some spices. It’s very tasty, healthy and delicious recipe. We can eat the sambar with idli, dosa and rice also.

Ingredients

  •         1 cup of split red gram
  •         1 potato
  •         ½ cup of chopped bottle gourd
  •         Drumstick as required
  •         1 chopped onion
  •         1 chopped tomatoes  
  •         ½ tsp of mustard seeds
  •         ½ tsp of fenugreek seeds
  •         1 tsp of turmeric powder
  •         Pinch of asafoetida
  •         1 tsp of red chilli powder
  •         1 tbsp of sambar masala
  •         50gm tamarind
  •         jaggery
  •         2-3 dried red chillies
  •         curry leaves
  •         coriander leaves
  •         salt
  •         oil

Procedure:-

  1.   Soak the tamarind in 3-4 tbsp of water.

  2.   Wash the split red gram (toor dal) 2-3 times.

  3.   Cut the potato, drumstick, bottle gourd into small pieces.

  4.   Take a pressure cooker and add split red gram in it.

  5.   Add 1 glass of water, turmeric powder and salt and mix it well.

  6.   Close the pressure cooker lid.

  7.   Keep the pressure cooker on flame (gas).

  8. Cook it up to 4-5 whistles on medium flame.

  9.   Let it cool down.

  10.                Keep the pan on gas.

  11.                Add 1 tbsp of oil.

  12.                When the oil is heated, add mustard seeds.

  13.                When the mustard seeds crackles, add fenugreek seeds.

  14.                Add dried red chillies, curry leaves, asafoetida and chopped onion.

  15.                Cook it for 2 minutes on medium flame.

  16.                Add turmeric powder and mix it.

  17.                Add chopped tomatoes, red chilli powder and salt to taste and mix it well.

  18.                Cover the pan with lid and cook it for 2-3 minutes on low flame.

  19.                Open the lid and mix it well.

  20.                Add sambar masala, chopped coriander and mix it well.

  21.                Add all chopped vegetables and mix it.

  22.                Add water as required and mix it.

  23.                Add tamarind juice, jaggery and mix it.

  24.                Add cooked split red gram (toor dal) and mix it.

  25.                Boil it.

  26.                Reduce the flame.

  27.                Cover the pan with lid and cook it for 8-10 minutes on low flame.

  28.                Serve the sambar in a serving plate.

  29.                Enjoy the tasty sambar with idli, dosa and rice also.
