Ingredients

  • 1kg boneless lamb, cut into small cubes
  • 1 cup plain yogurt
  • 2 large onions, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tsp ground cumin
  • 2 tsp ground coriander
  • 1 tsp ground turmeric
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp ground black pepper
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 cup water
  • Fresh cilantro, chopped for garnish

Procedure:

  • In a large bowl, mix together the yogurt, onions, garlic, cumin, coriander, turmeric, cinnamon, black pepper, and salt.
  • Add the lamb cubes to the bowl and mix well to coat the lamb evenly with the yogurt marinade.
  • Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or overnight.
  • Heat the oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat.
  • Add the lamb and marinade to the pot and stir well.
  • Add the water to the pot and bring the mixture to a boil.
  • Reduce the heat to low and simmer the lamb for about 1 hour, or until the lamb is tender and the sauce has thickened.
  • Garnish with fresh cilantro and serve the Afgani Lamb with steamed rice or naan bread.
